Companion Dogs

K4PSD deeply understands the unique and profound bond between pet dogs and their families, recognizing the extensive therapeutic benefits pets provide. This bond has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve psychological well-being, and encourage both physical activity and social interaction.

Initially, all dogs in the K4PSD program start in one of the primary training programs. As they progress, the staff evaluates their aptitude and potential. Some dogs, identified through this process, are found to be more suited for a role as a Companion Dog rather than in a specialized service capacity. These dogs, known for their gentle nature and basic obedience training, are placed with children, adults, and seniors who have various disabilities. While these Companion Dogs do not possess public access rights or specialized skill training, their presence offers invaluable emotional support and companionship.

To date, K4PSD's rigorous selection process has yet to designate any dogs as Companion Dogs. However, the establishment of the Companion Dog Program represents a significant step in fully utilizing the potential of all dogs within K4PSD. This program aims to extend the reach of K4PSD's efforts, ensuring more families and individuals in need benefit from the healing presence of a well-trained canine companion. This initiative underscores K4PSD's commitment to enhancing lives through the power of dogs, recognizing that sometimes, the simple presence of a devoted pet can make a world of difference.

Costs

K4PSD’s Companion Dogs are expected to be valued at as much as $10,000.

K4PSD receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations from the general public, corporate sponsors, fundraising events, and community supporters.

Our clients are expected to assist in our fundraising efforts. Their targets for companion dogs are at least $10,000, however the amount raised is not tied to when they will receive their companion dog. Many of them participate by asking for donations from friends and family, by organizing their own fundraisers and also by helping promote many K4PSD organized community fundraisers. Individuals or families who do not show significant effort may risk losing their acceptance status.

Wait Times

To date, K4PSD has not identified any dogs suitable for the Companion Dog Program. It is inherently difficult to predict the timing availability of a Companion dog.

The timing of a Companion Dog placement with be determined by chronological position on the waiting list and the availability of the right dog for the client’s needs and situation, and will in no way tied to fundraising efforts.
